Methods of measurement, as based on interferometry, for determining PMD, have proved to be slow and require cumbersome equipment and are not suitable for PMD-compensation devices in transmission paths. An optoelectronic heterodyne receiver is now used to provide modulation of an optical data signal being analyzed with the radiation of a wavelength-tunable optical element, in particular a laser.
