The confocal imaging system has a laser for illuminating the skin via a confocal imaging lens and an optoelectronic detector providing a signal representing the light reflected from the skin. An oscillating retroreflector, e.g. a right-angle prism (11), is inserted in the light path for vertical movement of the focal point relative to the skin surface.
