The magnetic bearing for centering a first component (a) which can be tilted with respect to a second component (B) comprises a hollow ferromagnetic section (11) connected to the first component whose inner surface (11a) is a section of a sphere. An inner section (12) connected to the second component consists of two separate portions (12A, 12B) separated by a middle zone (12C). Each portion comprises at least three ferromagnetic zones arranged at an angle to each other and with two air gaps between them and the hollow component. Coils (13A, 13B) generate magnetic flux across the two gaps. The magnetic bearing for centering a first component (a) which can be tilted through at least 5 deg with respect to a second component (B) comprises a hollow section (11) connected to the first component whose inner surface (11A) is a section of a sphere. This consists wholly or partly of ferromagnetic material. An inner section (12) connected to the second component consists of two separate portions (12A, 12B) separated by a middle zone (12C). Each portion comprises at least three ferromagnetic zones arranged at an angle to each other and with two air gaps between them and the inner surface of the hollow component. Coils (13A, 13B) are arranged to generate magnetic flux across the two gaps. An activating switch (100) allows current to be supplied selectively to the coils.
