The unit for automatic positioning of a rotor with a contact-less permanent magnetic bearing(2) and high temperature superconducting material has a thermal actuator(11) which holds the rotor at normal ambient temperature in a stable neutral position, and which when cooled by a cooling medium below the transition temperature of the superconductor is thermomechanically deformed so that the rotor occupies its operating position with the HTS magnetic bearing.
