The bus system has at least one host computer (2) and several slave subscribers (3-6) for switching to bus lines (9,10) successively or serially via at least two interfaces. Each subscriber places an address allocation part of a definite, unmistakable command received in a data packet via a first interface into an address memory accessible by the appropriate subscriber and passes the data packet with the same command and altered address via the second interface to a neighboring subscriber. An independent claim is also included for a method of automatic address allocation.
