The motor drive has a multi-phase power transformer (101) with at least one primary winding circuit (102) coupled to a multi-phase AC power source and a number of secondary winding circuits (103-111), associated with respective power cells (112-120). A modulation control and/or regulation device is coupled to the power cells for preventing harmonics in the input lines from the power source and in the output lines (122,123,124) to the load motor (121). An Independent claim for a 4-quadrant operating method for reducing harmonics in a motor drive is also included.
