A carrier for prolonged release of an active agent (A) comprises a composite ceramic article consisting of at least two bonded ceramic bodies, at least one of which is impregnated with (A). An Independent claim is included for the production of the carrier, by (i) forming the ceramic bodies, each having a bonding surface, (ii) preparing a composition in which primary particles of a bonding ceramic (preferably of the same material as the bodies) are distributed, (iii) applying the composition to the bonding surface of at least one of the bodies, (iv) sintering the two bodies, with the bonding composition located in between, to give a composite and (v) impregnating with (A).
