A freely formed surface (20) which allows for vehicle body shape has an illumination source (P) and optical axis (Ax). A reference surface (5) orthogonal to the optical axis has a grid (50) and individual grid squares (54) are projected (24) parallel to the optical axis on to the freely formed surface (20). The actual optical shape of each of the projected squares (24) is then calculated using applicable focal length curves
