Production of paste comprises: (i) mixing water with lead oxide; (ii) reacting an acid with the lead oxide in a mixture forming lead oxide-lead-acid compounds, and (iii) forming a paste with baked lead-acid crystals. The mixing, reacting and crystal forming steps are carried out in an extrusion device (101). The paste produced is extruded from the extruder into a grid, where the paste is dried to form a battery plate of the lead-acid battery. Preferred Features: The extrusion device has a first cylindrical bore (31) containing a screw-like rotating element (29) to move the material in the direction of a nozzle opening (28).
