The rails (12) are laid on sleepers (11) which are set in ballast (13) in the usual way. The ballast is held in a trough (14) consisting of a flat concrete foundation plate (15) and a low wall (16) at each side. Sideways extensions (17) of the foundation plate hold foundations (19) for masts (18) for overhead wire electrification, and there are holes (22) through the extensions to accommodate electric cables.
