For melt spinning a number of filaments, the polymer is extruded through a spinneret (4). After the filaments (6) have been cooled, they are assembled into a yarn, to be taken off at a given speed. The gathered filament yarn (8) is compressed by a compacting unit (12), and the compacted yarn is taken off at a given speed which is slower than the take-off speed from the cooling stage (5). The take-off speed from the cooling stage is at least 4000 m/min. and preferred at least 6000 m/min.. The yarn material is compacted at a yarn speed of maximum 2000 m/min.. through the compacting stage, and preferred maximum 1000 m/min.. The compacting unit has a texturizing jet to compress the filament yarn.. The compressed yarn is cooled, and can be compressed again across the yarn direction before it is stored (15). The yarn is compressed between two rollers, with a smaller gap between them than the yarn thickness. The yarn is stored as a wound bobbin package, or a container to be filled with the compressed yarn, at a controlled yarn movement speed. The yarn material is processed before the compression stage, and it is drawn (10).
