The method of aligning data into tracks is simplified and reliable and involves initially selecting a track as a reference track and then storing the characters from each track in successive positions of FIFO-register structures, according to the junctions in respective clock signals. For each track, it is then determined whether each simultaneously nearest read-sign is a blank, and then determining (89-91) relative to the reference track for each non-reference track, whether the assigned, simultaneously read characters are different characters. Latches (97-99) are the then switched over for each track and the assigned track-read cursor/pointer is then incremented by amounts which are above the value of the common read-cursor/pointer.
