The cathode ray tube has a color selection mask and a metal frame carrying it under tension in at least one direction. The mask's coefficient of thermal expansion is lower than that of the material forming most of the frame. Two metal inserts on opposing frame sides extend along the sides, are attached to them and have a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the mask, which is attached to the frame, e.g. by welding to the inserts. The cathode ray tube has a color selection mask (2) and an essentially rectangular metal frame for carrying the mask and holding it under tension in at least one direction, whereby the coefficient of thermal expansion of the mask is lower than that of the material forming most of the frame. Two metal inserts (10) on at least two opposing sides (4) of the frame extend along the sides, are attached to them and have a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the mask, which is attached to the frame, e.g. by welding to the metal inserts.
