The turbocharger for a motor vehicle engine, has a compressor housing connected to a turbine housing, with a turbine wheel fixed at one end of shaft in the turbine housing exhaust gas passage. The turbocharger has a partition (23) for dividing the exhaust passage at one upstream side of the turbine wheel (22) in an inner volute (24) and an outer volute (25). The partition wall which has several connecting passages (23a), which allows the exhaust gas in the outer volute to flow into the inner volute. An adjusting valve (6) is arranged at an inlet opening (25a) of the outer volute, for controlling of exhaust gas amounts, which flow in the outer volute and the inner volute. The cross sectional surface of the outer volute (25) reduces gradually from its beginning (A) to a specified position (C) and partly reduces in an axial direction of the shaft (13). The axial width of the outer volute (25) is in part the same as the width of the connecting passages (23a), from the specified position (C) to the end (D) of the outer volute.
