The variable valve timing gear for an internal combustion engine has an inlet valve operated by a first(6) and second(7) camshaft via a coupling mechanism(10) which has a pushrod(11) with cam follower rollers on its ends. The pushrod is rotatably mounted on a lever(14) which is mounted on the bearing cover(16) for the first camshaft, and is preferably premounted. A spring(24) which pretensions the lever so that the first cam follower roller bears against the first cam is mounted in the bearing cover of the first camshaft, and preferably premounted.
