Apparatus for determining the concentration of a test gas in a sample comprises: (a) a microwave source (14) producing a signal of frequency 500 MHz - 300 GHz; (b) a test chamber (12) containing the sample and through which the signal passes; (c) a transducer (28) which produces an output signal; and (d) a processor (34) for the output signal which calculates the concentration of test gas in the sample. An Independent claim is included for apparatus as described above for determining the concentration of anesthetic in a gas.
