In many cases, the damage resulting, after a fire, due to the action of liquid extinguishing agent is greater than the actual fire damage. This also applies if the extinguishing agent is sprayed by means of a nozzle, as is used in the case of known extinguishing systems. The novel process is intended to manage with as little extinguishing liquid as possible when extinguishing a fire. Since the nozzle used is a two-component nozzle (1) in the case of which a gas - advantageously an inert gas - which is fed to the nozzle (1) and flows out at a high speed atomises the extinguishing liquid, this achieves a considerable increase in surface area with a high proportion in terms of the smallest droplets, with the result that the extinguishing agent can absorb a relatively large quantity of heat in a relatively short period of time. This increase in the extinguishing action in the novel process reduces the requirement for liquid extinguishing agent to a considerable extent with respect to the requirement in the case of known processes.
