PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound having sufficiently high tilt angle or exhibiting sufficiently high response speed for the use as a main liquid crystal component. ;SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by the formula I (R is a straight-chain alkyl; A is O or COO bond; (m) is an integer of ≥5; (n) is an integer of ≥1; X and Y are each H or F; C* represents asymmetric carbon), e.g. R-3-fluoro-4-(1-trifluoromethyl-6-ethoxyhexyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-4'-n- octyloxyphenylcarboxyoxy)benzoate of the formula II. The compound of the formula I, e.g. the exemplified compound of the formula II can be produced by producing p-n-octyloxybenzoic acid from p-hydroxybenzoic acid and n-octyl bromide and successively converting the product through 2-fluoro-4- acetoxybenzoic acid, 2-fluoro-4-acetoxy-1-(1-trifluoromethyl-6- ethoxyhexyloxycarbonyl)benzene and 4 other intermediates.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
