Device for polarization separation and application in an illumination system of a liquid crystal display device

The illumination system includes a light source which emits a non-polarised light beam (F). A polarisation separator (PBS) receives this beam and re-transmits towards the liquid crystal display two beams polarised in the same direction. The axes of the two beams form a given angle (2xbeta) between them. A matrix of microlenses is provided to direct light onto the liquid crystal display (LCD). Each microlens directs the light from one of the two beams on to a first screen element (EL1), and the light from the second beam on to a second screen element (EL2).
