A burst mode optical digital receiver comprises an opto-electronic detector (8), up-conversion means (9, 10) for up-converting the frequency of the outuput of the opto-electronic detector, amplifier means (11) for amplifying the up-converted signal, and down-conversion means (10, 12) for down-converting the frequency of the amplifed signal.
