The procedure for simplifying a mesh source (41) uses a first stage of decimation by merging edges and replacing the two associated vertices by a single vertex. After decimation a pseudo-optimization stage is introduced whereby the single vertex is placed midway between the first vertices if they are each surrounded by an equal number of sharp edges (42,44) or alternatively at the vertex with the greater number of sharp edges (43,45)
