Process for extracting an active agent (I) for controlling melanin synthesis in skin cells comprises: (a) preparing an aqueous wheatgerm solution with a solids content above 50 g/l; (b) filtering the solution; (c) optionally concentrating and/or dehydrating the filtrate; and (d) sterilizing the product by filtration on a membrane. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) (I) having a solids content above 50 g/l (especially 90-150 g/l), a pH of 3-10 (especially 6-7), a glutathione concentration above 150 micro g/ml and a glutathione reductase concentration above 150 mU/ml; and (2) a cosmetic composition for controlling melanin synthesis in skin cells, comprising (I) in a suitable dosage form.
