The bed consists of an articulated multi-section mattress support (8) on a frame which can be adjusted for height, and a suppoorting structure with a narrow central lengthwise beam and end pillars (2, 4) with rollers (22) and mechanisms (32, 34, 36) for raising and lowering the frame. The space between the bed frame and end pillars is open and free of all obstacles.
