Catalyst preparation comprises using a support, at least one group VIII metal and at least one further element M from germanium, niobium, tin, lead, rhenium, gallium, indium, gold, silver and thallium. M is introduced in an aqueous solvent at pH below 10 as an organometallic compound containing at least one M-carbon bond. Independent claims are included for: (1) the obtained catalyst, (2) the isomerization of aromatic compounds at 300-500 deg C, hydrogen partial pressure 0.3-1.5 MPa and total pressure 0.45-1.9 Mpa and spatial velocity (kg charge/kg catalyst/h) 0.25-0.3 h-1, and (3) the dismutation of toluene and/or the transalkylation of alkyl aromatics at 250-600 deg C, 1-6 Mpa, spatial velocity 0.1-10 and mol. ratio hydrogen:hydrocarbons of 2-20.
