Elliptical headlamp providing dual functions on motor vehicle, giving optimum high and low beam operation of the headlamp

The elliptical headlamp has a bulb (10) in a reflector (20) forming a beam which is projected ahead by a lens (30). A movable screen (40) in the active position hides part of the beam, to ensure the upper part of the beam is cut off for low beam operation. The reflector is shaped to separate the beam into two components, one that is never obscured and the other may be obscured.
