Production of a hollow sphere, namely a petanque ball, involves laser welding of two hollow hemispherical half-shells (3) made of a steel alloy and whose joining surfaces make perfect contact, without using an additional metal, in order to obtain homogeneous hardness on the whole surface of the ball after thermal treatment. Preferred Features: The laser beam (2) is positioned on the interface of the contact surfaces such that the laser energy provides local fusion of the interface over the whole of the contact region. After complete fusion of the interface a sealed closed volume is produced. The two hemispherical half-shells (3) are positioned by a mechanism that ensures positioning of the two half-shells (3) in the X, Y and Z planes with respect to the axis of the laser beam (2) as well as following the rotations Theta X, Theta Y and Theta Z. The laser beam (2) is synchronized with the movements of the positioning system by a microcomputer. An Independent claim is given for an apparatus for positioning the half shells (3) with reference to the plane containing the laser beam axis.
