A suspension of reinforcing material is formed with magnesium fluoride in an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride. The suspension is poured into a mold and allowed to set, to obtain the green, shaped preform. This is dried and fired at about 1100 deg C. In the resultant finished preform, the binder is sintered magnesium fluoride. An Independent claim is included for a composite produced.
