Two stage settling of surface water to remove solids, with quick turn around in the first stage and a thick sludge produced in the second stage

Solids are separated from a liquid by a two stage settling process. Sludge from the base (31) of the first settler (30) is transferred (20) by difference in levels to the thickener (10). Supernatant can then be discharged from the first settler, leaving it ready for reuse while the sludge continues to thicken.
