Fusion protein (I) comprising HPPD (hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase) fused at either end to a signal protein (SP) that directs HPPD to cellular compartments other than cytoplasm or plasts, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) nucleic acid (II) encoding (I); (b) chimeric gene (CG; expression cassette) comprising at least one (II) plus heterologous 5' and 3' regulators functional in a host organism; (c) cloning and/or expression vector containing at least one CG; (d) host organism transformed to contain CG; (e) transformed plants having at least one CG integrated stably into the genome; (f) seeds of the plants of (e); (g) selective weed control, particularly in crops, by applying an HPPD inhibitor to the transformed plants of (e), before sowing, or pre- or post-emergence; and (h) method for growing plants of (e) which includes application of an HPPD inhibitor.
