A plastic bag has two sheets joined at their peripheries apart from an opening in the bag. A sheath around the opening contains a drawstring. The sheath has a cut out to make it easier for a user to grip the drawstring. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) manufacturing the above bag by cutting a continuous web longitudinally, superimposing the two halves and cutting them to the length of the bags. Two drawstrings are placed in each half and the cut out formed in each half. The longitudinal edges of the two halves are welded together and pairs of transverse welds are formed at regular intervals. A tear line is formed between each pair of welds; (b) a modification of (a) uses only one drawstring.
