The coated cathode is characterized by a low overpotential with regard to reduction of water and a better resistance to corrosion compared to a conventional mild steel cathode. The cathode for electrolysis of aqueous solutions comprises an electroconductive substrate coated with an intermediate oxide layer based on titanium and a precious metal of group VIII and an external oxide layer comprising titanium, zirconium and a group VIII precious metal. An Independent claim is also included for the use of the cathode.
