Supersonic gas injection into an electric arc furnace involves using a surrounding gas jet to protect the supersonic gas jet against the ambient atmosphere. An Independent claim is also included for an electric arc furnace for carrying out the above process, the furnace having an oxygen injector (1) positioned with its lower end 0.5-1.5 m above a bath surface and with an injection angle of 15-60 deg between its longitudinal axis (XX) and the vertical. Preferred Features: The supersonic gas jet consists of oxygen, argon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, air, combustion gases or steam and the protective gas jet consists of preheated oxygen or air or recycled furnace gases.
