Copolymers (CP) consisting of units (A) and units (B), containing 4-30 wt.% of an optical brightener (C) attached to (B) by covalent bonds. Copolymers (CP) consisting of units (A) and units (B), containing 4-30 wt.% of an optical brightener (C) attached to (B) by covalent bonds. Independent claims are also included for: (a) production of (CP) by radical copolymerization of a monomer (A') with a monomer (B') to which (C) is attached by covalent bonds; (b) production of (CP) by making a copolymer containing pendant groups which can react with (C) and then reacting these groups with (C); (c) a polymerizable monomer of formula Ar-CH=CH-pPhe-pPhe-CH=CH-mPhe-OCO-C(CH3)=CH2 (VII) for use in process (a); (d) preparation of a polymerizable monomer of formula Ar'-CH=CH-pPhe-pPhe-CH=CH-mPhe-R1 (VIII) by coupling a boronic acid of formula Ar'-CH=CH-pPhe-B(OH)2 (IX) with a compound of formula Br-pPhe-CH=CH-mPhe-OH to give a biphenyl derivative of formula Ar'-CH=CH-pPhe-pPhe-CH=CH-mPhe-OH which is then reacted with a compound R1H; (e) preparation of a monomer of formula (VIII) in which R1 is a (meth)acrylamido group, by coupling boronic acid (IX) with a bromo-nitro compound (Br-pPhe-CH=CH-mPhe-NO2), then reducing the product to the corresponding amine and reacting the amine with (meth)acrylic acid. Ar = 3,5-di-tert.-butylphenyl; pPhe = 1,4-phenylene; mPhe = 1,3-phenylene Ar' = 3,5-dialkylphenyl, preferably 3,5-di-tert.-butylphenyl; R1 = (meth)acryloyloxy.
