The variable type translation associates (100) a variable with a specific variable type, coded from 2p bits, which may be a redundant variable type, lock variable or pseudo-integer variable. The p most significant bits can be lost. This permits adaptation (101,102) of the type and number of bits by suppression of the more significant bits.
