The system for joining two pipes (1, 2) comprises abutting their ends which have bevelled sections (6, 7) and vertical sections which contact each other. Force is then applied to the pipes so that molecular bonding occurs where they are in contact. This may be carried out using clamps (28, 29) which fit over flanges (21, 22) on the pipes and can be tightened by screws (35).
