The synthetic process avoids problems of polymerization and formation of heavy residues, management of intermediate fractions etc. Process for the synthesis of a symmetrical anhydride of formula R1C(O)OC(O)R1 (I) comprises the reaction of a mixed anhydride of formula R1C(O)OC(O)-R2 (II) with a carboxylic acid of formula R1C(O)OH (III). R1 = alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl; R2 = 1-40C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aryl-(1-40C alkyl) or (1-40C alkyl)-aryl.
