Pharmaceutical compositions contain 3-(N-substituted amino)-2,2-dialk(en)yl-1,4-butyrolactone or -thiolactone compounds (I), together with a carrier. Most of (I) are new compounds. Pharmaceutical compositions contain 3-(N-substituted amino)-2,2-dialk(en)yl-1,4-butyrolactone or -thiolactone compounds of formula (I), together with a carrier. Z' = O or S; R1, R2 = alkyl or alkenyl; X = CO, COO, SO or SO2 and R = alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or aralkyl. Independent claims are included for the following: (i) the preparation of (I) and (ii) (I) as new compounds, provided that if Z' = O, X = SO2 and R = p-tolyl, then R1 and R2 are not both Me.
