A display panel (2) within a driver's normal field of vision shows a speed counter (3) continuously and as soon as detected an image (1) of the stop lights of a preceding vehicle. The stop lights image is shown for a very brief time which is shorter than the threshold for conscious perception but longer than the threshold of unconscious perception. The driver then reacts more quickly to the naturally perceived requirement.
