An autothermal reaction is initiated in a primary zone between the hydrocarbon and an oxygen-containing fluid to heat the reformer to the required temperature, followed by an injection of water. A reforming process is then effected in a secondary zone in the presence of a catalyst. A process for the autothermal reforming of a hydrocarbon, particularly diesel fuel, is claimed. To start the reaction, a combustible mixture comprising the hydrocarbon to reform and an O2-containing fluid are introduced in a primary reaction zone and fired by an energy supply. After attaining the temperature necessary for the autothermal reaction, water (or a water-containing fluid) is injected in an amount necessary for the reforming process which takes place in a secondary reaction zone. An Independent claim is also included for the installation to effect the process.
