The air conditioner for a motor vehicle has a main circuit (2) with a blower (3) an evaporator (4) an air mixing grill (6) and a reheater (5). The air conditioner has an ambient air inlet (25), an interior air inlet (7) and an engine bay air inlet (24). All inlets are connected to a manifold (2) and are controlled by a grill for flow connection to it. A second grill (26) selectively connects the ambient and engine bay inlets to the manifold when the engine is idling long enough while the heater is working at maximum power.
