The vehicle seat back has an upper part (7), in the area normally occupied by the head rest, and a lower part (6). The lower part carries a flexible pocket (20) filled with fluid, roughly in line with part of the back of the occupant and designed to operate a safety device to protect the neck of the occupant, during shock loading. The upper part of the seat back is mobile, relative to the lower part, and is tilted by upwards pressure from the flexible pocket, when it is compressed by the seat occupant during shock loading.
