Use of aromatic polycyclic compounds having PPARs-type receptor activator activity for treatment of skin, barrier function, immune system, cardiovascular system, and lipid metabolism disorders

The use of aromatic polycyclic compounds (I) their salts and chiral analogs, in compositions for the treatment of disorders of the skin, barrier function, immune system, cardiovascular system, and lipid metabolism is new. The polycyclic compounds that are used are of formula (I): R = H or -OR3; X = -C=O or -C=N-OH; R1 and R2 = H, 1-12C alkyl, -OR4, -S(O)nR4, -OCOR4, or -NHCOR4, or R1 and R2 taken together with the adjacent aromatic ring form a 5 or 6 membered ring optionally substituted by methyl and optionally containing O, S, SO or SO2; R3 = H, 1-20C alkyl, mono or polyhydroxyalkyl; n = 0, 1, or 2; R4 = H, lower alkyl, or phenyl with the proviso that when X = CO, then R1 and R2 do not form a 5 membered ring substituted by methyl groups.
