The water retainer (1) consists of a rectangular panel fitted inside a WC cistern to hold back a substantial quantity of water. The panel has side lips (3a) on its front and rear surfaces and a horizontal lip (4) to engage with the inner walls of the cistern, the side lips increase progressively in width from bottom to top and have suction cups (5) for enhanced adhesion. The horizontal lip reduces in thickness towards its free edge so that it squashes against the bottom of the cistern to form a seal.
