New low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate compound obtained from marine animal cartilage, useful in cosmetic or dermatological compositions for stimulating human dermal fibroblast metabolism and growth
A new low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate compound (I) is obtained from marine animal cartilage by a completely aqueous phase process involving enzymatic hydrolysis, acidic depolymerization and diafiltration, and at a concentration of 0.2% increases the cellular growth of human dermal fibroblasts by more than 170%, more than 160% or more than 70% as determined by incorporation of thymidine, glucosamine or leucine respectively. Independent claims are also included for: (1) preparation of (I), involving introduction of ground cartilage into a reactor at a cartilage/water ratio of 10-60 (preferably 20-50) wt. %; and (2) a chondroitin sulfate (II) of molecular weight more than 100000, obtained during the production of (I).
