A card reader (50) has a connector (53) to receive the contacts (7) of an integrated circuit card (5) and in addition is able to communicate with a fixed terminal (60) by means of an inductive field (FLD). The reader has a microcontroller (52) and microprocessor (52-1), a screen (54) and keyboard (55) and is able to display data on the card or allow a terminal to change card data.
