The pedal drive converter transmission has the pedal cranks driving a shaft (3) carrying arms (5,6) on which satellite gears (12,13) are mounted to mesh with a central gear (7) and on their opposite sides with a crown gear ring (8). The crown ring has a groove (9) to receive a drive belt. A hydraulic pump (10) driven by the central gear is controlled by a hand grip to vary the braking effect on the drive assembly.
