A model helicopter (1) is controlled by a pilot (2) and takes pictures of a wall (4) with a camera (10,11). Laser equipment (18,19) positions the helicopter and this data together with the camera orientation on the helicopter and image distance is received at a control desk (6). Each picture taken by the helicopter camera is thus related to a known position on the wall enabling a systematic examination to be made. An Independent claim is made in respect of equipment for picking up visible characteristics on walls.
