The use of an alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) inhibitor (I) is claimed in the cosmetic treatment of keratin materials to prevent, attenuate and/or suppress the undesirable effects of primary alcohols (II) on the surface layers of the skin or its appendages. Independent claims are included for: (i) a cosmetic treatment method for keratin materials, involving application of a first component containing (II) and a second component containing (I), the two components being applied simultaneously, together or sequentially to cutaneous tissues to be protected; (ii) a cosmetic agent in kit form, including the two components as in (i); and (iii) a cosmetic composition comprising a medium containing (II) and (I) at concentration inhibiting the activity of ADH in vitro by at least 50%.
