New synthetic organic compounds of ceramide type useful in cosmetic formulations to restore a protective skin barrier damaged by ageing or other external factors such as UV or chemical products

The synthetic ceramide-type compounds are similar in structure to natural ceramides, possessing long chain alkyl groups and hydroxyl groups ; phosphoric or sulfuric groups may also be introduced to increase penetration of the permeable barrier. The compounds are of the general formula (I): m, n = 1 - 3; k, l = 1 - 2; j = 0 or 1; A1, A2, A3 = H or a structure (II):- (M, M1, M2 = alkaline earth metals or a notrogenous base, and L = an alkaline earth metal); R = a group of structure (III):- (B = Me, in position 5,7 or 8 ; m = 1 - 3; and D = -CH3-CH(CH3) or -CH=C(CH3)). An Independent claim is also included for preparation of the compounds.
