The unit includes a vessel with an opening (20) connected to a collector (9) which is angled to the rear to allow part of the layer of hydrocarbons in front of the vessel to be collected by natural flow. The forward speed is controlled according to the receiving capacity. The collector drains (10) contains stop valves and distribute the water/hydrocarbon mixture to selected tanks (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) to port and starboard. A large capacity seawater pump (11) returns water from the tanks to the sea via a pipe (12) and nozzle (13). It is the volume of water pumped out that defines the rate of collection of the water/hydrocarbon mixture. A hydrocarbons pump (14) transfers the decanted oil from the tanks through a pipe and nozzle to oil or slop tanks (7). These are emptied through a nozzle (17) to the outside.
